February 1, 2010 – Free Speech/Elections
The Supreme Court’s Citizens United vs FEC decision last week was a victory for free speech. Liberals are aghast, as the decision restores corporations’ rights to express an opinion about a political candidate. On a related subject, we note that the current incumbent is a cosponsor on a bill called the Fair Elections Now Act (these bills always sound so nice!), which essentially subjects a candidate’s free speech rights to redistribution by federal government bureaucrats. Some items included are tax-payer funded “political advertising broadcast vouchers,” a “Fair Elections Fund” (again funded by us!) and a federal Fair Elections Oversight Board, “whose members shall be individuals who are nonpartisan and, by reason of their education, experience, and attainments, exceptionally qualified to perform the duties of members of the Board.” You don’t say. . .
